Some of my fondest childhood memories are of spring and summer days spent skipping. I spent hours jumping rope to an endless list of rhymes and songs, whether it was a solo activity in the back garden or queuing to take my turn in the school playground. I didn’t know it at the time, but not only was I having fun, but I was participating in one of the best forms of exercising around.
Skipping has some huge Physical Benefits, not only does it burn an amazing average of 11 calories per minute, but it is fantastic for developing stamina, balance, flexibility, symmetry and coordination. In fact the very act of jumping up and down increases calcium flow in your body helping to prevent conditions such as osteoporosis.
There are fantastic Mental Benefits to skipping as well. Young children especially can struggle to coordinate both sides of their bodies, skipping can help remedy this. It requires both sides of your body to act in unison, thus requiring both sides of your brain to work simultaneously. Science aside, skipping is simply great fun, bringing huge smiles to every skipper’s face.
